Power up your morning breakfast

Hemp seeds, coconut, berriesPower up your morning breakfast – toppings that will bring nourishment and flavour to your mornings.

Porridge and muesli are my two ‘go-to’ breakfasts. They are easy, nourishing and satisfying. My favourite thing about this breakfast is that no two porridges or mueslis need to be the same. You can jazz up your breakfast in so many ways with the most delicious flavours and textures.

In my opinion there are two components to a great toppings; sweetness and texture. So when you are selecting your toppings you need to think about what is bringing the sweetness, and what texture is providing the crunch or softness.

Berries, coconut, granola

To bring sweetness to your bowl add one or two of the following natural sweeteners:

  • Fruit – the best fruits are blueberries, bananas, strawberries and raspberries. If you want a little more tartness go for oranges and kiwis
  • A dollop of chia jam (link)
  • Spices like cinnamon
  • Desiccated coconut

For a crunchy texture add:

  • Seeds – chia seed, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds
  • Granola oat or buckwheat
  • Chopped nuts
  • Coconut flakes
  • Cacao nibs
  • Fruits – like strawberries and blueberries and dried mulberries (Navitas the brand sell these)

For a smoother texture add:

  • Desiccated coconut
  • Soft fruits like – banana and raspberries

Not only do these toppings add flavour and panache to your breakfast, they also boost the nutritional value of it.
